Primary school
Pupils are admitted to primary school P1 at the beginning of the school year in September of the calendar year in which the child turns six years old.
In primary school, the focus is on the mother tongue or dominant language (L1), mathematics and the first foreign language (L2), but art, music, sport, discovery of the world and religion/ethics are also important, as are the 'European Hours', where children from the different departments with different nationalities come together for a variety of activities.
Primary School Curriculum
All subjects taught follow the recommendations of the document “harmonised syllabi in Primary Cycle”.
The curricula are identical in all language sections of the European Schools and are subject to the same requirements. All the curricula followed in the different language sections lead to the same qualification: the European Baccalaureate.
To ensure that the European Baccalaureate is recognised, the curricula are designed to meet the requirements in each Member State.
